| Captures: Magical Mystery by Dave Abbott |
Magical Mystery
I was awakened by soft rain fall and the lullaby of birds soaring from above, the lakes residents was singing songs of praise a sound I have heard so many times in the past but a sound that never tires in my mind, the light was just breaking and as I peered from the bivvy the sounds of the birds and wildlife sounded like they had just woken from a deep sleep, there soft songs of voice made me realise that I was fishing...........
I lay there sleepy but alert staring at the rising sun, the light reflected on the lakes surface and created a stunning picture I rubbed my eyes whilst looking out at the creamy rays of light shimmering through the old oak trees, the moisture of the night still roamed in the fresh morning air and was falling from the bivvy top hitting my bed chair in the process occasionally waking me from my summers daze.
I slid out of my bed chair that felt ever more comfortable than my bed at home and I made my way out to the fresh lakeside the grass that was covered in shiny crystallised droplets of moisture and they was glowing in the morning sun like a expensive diamonds, the birds have now become louder and a robin has plumply perched on my rod tip fluffing its features in the process, I crumbed a few boilies and threw them forward at the bird, she quickly darted away but arrived back within minutes for a morning feast.
I sat on my recliner staring longingly at the rising sun as it dipped into the water lifting cloudy rays like strands of caramel sticking to a crisp golden apple. the droplets of water danced through the sky and glistened softly in the sun as they fell from the trees making a soothing whisper as they sank into the water, the water now looked so still it felt like a weird and wonderful mirror of existence, out in this wonderful mirror of existence was many wonderful mysterious creatures, these were the creatures that I and many other anglers alike spent hours and years in pursuit of.
That day quickly passed and the minutes turned into hours then sun dropped down it was just as stunning as it was when it rose everything was ever so still and the silence was golden the tiny flickering’s started to appear in the dark sky little silver sequins was sewn into the velvet drape that enveloped the lake in narcotic darkness and peacefulness.
I fell asleep in the peacefulness but it was quickly shattered when my left hand rod signalled a steady take the rod tip bent around as line peeled from the reel my heart was beating fast but instinct took over as I swept the rod from its rest and tightened up the clutch. The waterside was enlightened by the stunning full moon and although dark it felt as light as day, I was in complete shock to the power of what was attached to my line, my entre being became focused on this moment and nothing else mattered but getting this fish in my net, the fish swam viciously but steady up the marginal shelf then turned quickly to my left trying to find cover in the marginal trees that hung beneath the water but I managed to turn her I was trying to steer her into safe water when I felt a painful bump in the line and everything went solid I was gutted... But I was pretty sure the fish was still on after holding solid for a good five minutes nothing gave so I decided to place the rod back on the rest, I sat on my recliner under the stars wishing and hoping, my heart was beating erratically and I lit a well needed cigarette and made a brew and just hoped for the best, after what felt like a lifetime I started to think my time had gone and all was lost but the line suddenly started to peel from the spool I jumped up and slowly applied pressure the fish she had come free and was now in the margin rolling and boiling under my net within a few minutes she was mine, I clasped the net and looked up at the stars thanking god for this moment. I made my way back to the bank with my prize to the safety of the unhooking mat I peeled back the Canadian pond weed to see a stunning common its colours was almost beyond description so golden and so perfect a truly magnificent creature - that night magic happened.
The sky was now as black as ink and as the moon faded behind the dark clouds within in a hour light arrived and the piccys was taken I said my thank you to the big girl “thank you for this special moment in time” then returned her back to the mysterious depths to fight another day.
Thanks Dave Abbott
